Aziza's Arrival at the Orphanage

A Heartbreaking Decision
The Famine
Rasheed's shop burns down, and the family is destitute. Laila and Mariam cannot feed the children. Rasheed insists Aziza must go to the orphanage.
The Goodbye
Laila and Mariam take Aziza to the orphanage. Aziza panics, clutching Mariam's doll. Laila promises to visit. The scene is devastating.
Zaman's Compassion
The director, Zaman, is kind. He runs the orphanage with little support. He asks no questions, understanding the desperation of mothers. He tells Laila it is not her fault.
Secret Lessons at the Orphanage

Education in Hiding
Zaman's Risky Teaching
Zaman secretly teaches the children reading, writing, and science. When the Taliban inspect, they hide the books and pretend to knit. Aziza learns about tectonic plates, transpiration, and the blue sky.
Visits and Stuttering
Laila visits, risking beatings from the Taliban. Aziza develops a stutter, a sign of trauma. But she excels in her hidden studies.
A Glimmer of Hope
Despite the oppression, the orphanage is a place of learning and resistance. Zaman's dedication keeps the children's minds alive.
Reunion and Renovation

A New Purpose
Aziza's Return
After Mariam's death, Laila and Tariq retrieve Aziza from the orphanage. Aziza is thin but alive. She slowly recovers with her family.
Laila's Vocation
Laila returns to Kabul and begins teaching at the orphanage. With Tariq and Zaman, they renovate the building: new windows, stoves, beds, a playground. The orphanage becomes a center of hope.
The Classroom
Laila's classroom is filled with children who have lost everything. She teaches them Farsi, poetry, and the value of learning. The orphanage is no longer just a shelter; it is a school for the future.
